One of the first all-electric phonographs dating back to the Roaring '20s.These 20th-century artifacts prized by collectors and retro enthusiasts alike may have stopped functioning long ago, but Ross Blomgren of Torrance-based RJB Electronic Services LLC will have them up and running in no time.
This is his specialty. And, adds Blomgren, "There just aren't that many of us around these days."
Give it time. Whether it's replacing a vintage turntable's bearings and bushings so that it's easy on the record or restoring an old pedal car back to its original glory, restoration is a small but curious business niche.
The History channel certainly thought there was interest enough when it recently debuted "American Restoration," a reality docuseries out to make a star of Las Vegas restorer Rick Dale and his crew at Rick's Restorations. It airs at 10 p.m. Fridays.
Blomgren also appears on TV weekly. He does educational segments on vintage music gear during "Beta Records TV," a nationally syndicated music program that airs 9 a.m. Saturdays on KNBC Digital Channel 4.2.
"As I do the shows I'll grab different (audio equipment) from different eras with different features, rebuild them and bring them up to show," he says, standing in his workshop surrounded by vintage electronics in various stages of restoration, including decorative '30s-era cathedral radios, neon jukeboxes and postwar picture tubes that look a little like iMacs.
There are portable phonographs from the 1960s, HiFi stereos and drive-in speakers.
"It's not boring work, that's for sure," he says.
Dale seconds that.
After years of tinkering he started his business in the early '80s buying and restoring vintage gas pumps, Coca-Cola vending machines, jukeboxes and pinball machines.
"I was a picker," he says. "I'd go running around to different places ... buying stuff. I'd bring it home, restore it and then run around the country and sell it."
Nowadays, and thanks to his show, customers bring him everything and anything made through the '50s, including kick-start gas-powered washing machines, rare motorcycles, wheeled fire extinguishers and a rare shoe-fitting X-ray device.
"This was something that was in stores in the '40s," Dale says. "Kids would come in, and the shoe salesman would have them stand on top of this machine ...
