Puddle of Mudd hits Corpus Christi Rock Scene
By:Richard Guerrero Jr./Special to the Caller-Times
Puddle of Mudd, a Kansas City, Mo., alternative rock band best known for hits "Blurry," "Away From Me" and "Psycho," will make its House of Rock debut Saturday.
When it first hit heavy rotation on modern rock radio in fall 2001, the band was a neo-grunge breath of fresh air in a heavy rock world dominated by the neu-metal titans of the day.
Originally formed in Kansas City in 1992 during the height of the initial grunge explosion, Puddle of Mudd vocalist Wes Scantlin relaunched the act in Los Angeles with bassist Doug Ardito in 1999 after Limp Bizkit vocalist Fred Durst expressed interest in a development deal.
Puddle of Mudd's major label debut album, "Come Clean," sold more than 5 million U.S. copies on the strength of radio hits like "Blurry" and "She Hates Me." Tour slots opening for Godsmack and the Deftones would follow.
Subsequent albums failed to capitalize on the momentum created by the Puddle of Mudd's impressive debut but the act managed to chart the occasional single such as "Heel Over Head" from the band's sophomore effort, "Life on Display," and "Famous," the lead single from the band's third album of the same name.
The band's most recent effort, "Vol. 4: Songs in the Key of Love and Hate," was released in late 2009 to tepid album sales and lackluster reviews. Ardito, the longtime bassist who cowrote "Blurry" and "Famous," left the band shortly after the album's release.
To date, Puddle of Mudd is planning to spend much of 2011 on the road. The band is planning its first U.K. tour since 2002. In March, Puddle of Mudd headlined the Monster Energy Showcase at the South by Southwest Festival.
House of Rock manager Casey Lain said local interest in the band's debut at the House of Rock has been building for weeks.
"We're getting a great buzz on Puddle of Mudd," Lain said. "This is the band's first time to the House of Rock or any venue our size in Corpus Christi. We are anticipating a good-size crowd."
Longtime rock concert fan Richard Morales said he's looking forward to catching the band up close and personal.
"I've been a fan since their first CD came out," Morales said, referring to "Come Clean." "This will be my first time seeing them — I really dig their hard-driving sound and the cool lyrics.
