Business Uses Fashion to Benefit Wildlife, Help Environment
Katy and Laura Tanis would have never guessed five years ago that a trip to the Malaysian Borneo would make them entrepreneurs for a fashion-forward business that has a heart.
The Franklin Lakes natives volunteered with orphaned and rehabilitated orangutans and witnessed the immediacy for an organization that spreads awareness about endangered species. After learning that many non-profits like the Red Panda Network and Sumatran Orangutan Society didn’t have the necessary resources to reach the masses, they saw fashion as their calling to help give back.
“There is a demand for this kind of clothing,” Katy Tanis said. “We realized that these organizations have no resources or money to make merchandise, and they can’t afford to hire anyone to do it, so we wanted to partner up and help them out.”
Daughter Earth , their brainchild, ships across the United States, and about 25 percent of their sales are international, where it is gaining a following in Europe and Australia.
Their website, DaughterEarth.com and their exposure on the Red Panda Network website, has been greatly responsible for the wide range of orders.
“My ideal vision is that people will buy our clothes that have tags about the different organizations that they’re donating to,” Tanis said.
Caroline Manzo, neighbor and longtime friend of the Tanis’s, has even endorsed the brand.
“Caroline has got us a lot more Twitter followers,” Tanis said.
They have done fashion shows, trade festivals and craft shows. Tanis, who currently lives in San Francisco, moved out of Franklin Lakes for a job offer and with hopes of promoting to a crowd that is more environmentally conscious.
“There are shows almost every weekend, so it’s actually more competitive here," Tanis said. "It’s such a small city – there are only 800,000 people in San Francisco with the same number of artists as in New York.”
Katy and Laura have been passionate about conservation since they were children. After their trip, they got excited about the prospect of starting a business, working out of their attic.
Alison Lutz, who is a fan of Daughter Earth and friend of Tanis, said she loves that the brand is fashionable but has a greater purpose.
"They raise awareness to the lesser known species that need help like the red panda and do so in a fun and affordable way," Lutz said. "I think everyone wants to feel good about what they are spending their money on and you can't go wrong with a good cause, especially a fashionable one.
