I would like to hear from anyone who has been through reverse culture shock. I'm just curious... where are you from, and where did you live abroad? When you got back to your home country, what was one thing that you really had a difficult time adjusting to... was there anything about home that you never really adjusted to? What was worse for you, reverse culture shock or the initial culture shock?

What did you miss more... your host country, per se, or did the whole experience make you long to travel and see the world even more?

When you go to another country (to study, to work, etc.) and start a new life there, you often go through what's called "culture shock." It's a process where adjusting is at first a challenge and eventually you adjust. There are different phases of culture shock. Likewise, many expatriates, upon returning home, experience "reverse culture shock." It means that your home doesn't feel like home anymore and you have to go through the adjustment process.

I studied abroad in Spain and Mexico. I studied in Mexico five years ago, and I got back from Spain a couple months ago. I'm from USA but I never really "fit in" or belonged in US culture, even before I went abroad. I felt completely at home in Spain; the stuff I have natural affinities for is stuff that runs strong in the Spanish culture. I felt completely at home in Mexico as well.

I've gotta admit I was really sad because I missed my mom (my parents are divorced and I rarely see my dad) and was scared because I was worried I wouldn't have friends (of course I made some) but I had a really easy time adjusting.

Then I got back to the USA and man oh man was reverse culture shock a bitch. I had a really rough time readjusting to USA both times. I think it's because I was maladjusted before I ever set foot out of the US. Stuff about North Carolina irritated me a lot and I felt alone and detached a lot. I'm just a passionate person, and Spain and Mexico have soul. Or maybe I was just meant to be Hispanic... I'm not sure. But North Carolina certainly doesn't feel like "home.
