Staples’ fiscal first-quarter profit rose 5% from the year-earlier period hurt by charges as sales edged up on currency changes. The company lowered its current-year per-share earnings forecast by 15 cents to $1.35 to $1.45, as first-quarter results were weaker than it expected. Shares declined 13% to $17.05 premarket.
Target Corp.’s first-quarter profit rose 2.7%, beating analysts’ expectations, as a stronger showing by its credit-card business came alongside lackluster retail sales. Shares rose 1.6% to $51.60 in recent premarket trading.
Deere & Co.’s fiscal second-quarter earnings surged 65% as the agricultural-equipment maker benefited from higher prices and volume, helping it beat analysts’ expectations. The company also unveiled plans for a new plant in China to meet rising demand and boosted its guidance for the year. Still, shares slipped 0.9% to $86.20 premarket.
Abercrombie & Fitch Co. swung to a bigger-than-expected fiscal first-quarter profit as margins improved on lower average unit costs and international product offerings. Shares were trading up 3.6% at $75.55 premarket.
