How Leah captured our hearts
A DUBLIN schoolgirl has spoken of her delight after meeting Queen Elizabeth II at Aras an Uachtarain.
Leah Ennis McLoughlin, a pupil at St Mary's School for the Deaf in Cabra, was given the honour of ringing the Peace Bell as the queen planted a tree.
President McAleese gave Leah a thumbs-up after she performed the duty along with Belfast teenager Danny Rea. "They were asking me where I was from. Then the President was saying 'thank you, you did a great job'," Leah revealed.
The youngster described her emotions as she performed the task.
"I felt honoured and proud to represent my school and all the deaf girls here," Leah said.
Leah and Danny, who are both deaf, were chosen to ring the Peace Bell as the queen planted a tree in the grounds of the President's home in the formal ceremony.
After they had tolled the bell once, President McAleese blew them a kiss before introducing them to the queen.
During the ceremony, head gardener Robert Norris handed the queen a spade and she carefully shovelled three piles of earth on to the tree.
The queen planted an Irish oak, following in the footsteps of Queen Victoria who planted a giant redwood in 1861. Danny (16), who attends the Northern Ireland Jordanstown School for the Deaf or Visually Impaired, said it was a special moment for him and his family.
"It's been such an honour," he said.
Meanwhile, Co Dublin schoolgirl Rachel Fox was the first member of the public to welcome the queen to Ireland.
Rachel (8), from Shankill, was "incredibly excited" to meet the British monarch, her school principal told the Herald.
A shy but beaming Rachel approached the queen on the red carpet at Casement Aerodrome and presented her with a bouquet of peony roses, avalanche roses and lisianthus.
The pupil at St Anne's School in Shankill also exchanged a few words with the 85-year-old head of state.

The sudden change in weather disrupted traffic and power supply at many places especially in East Nagpur though it also brought a welcome relief from oppressive heat. Uprooted trees added to the chaos in the traffic as many buses were diverted.

The Queen will then be invited to inspect an Irish military guard of honour before attending a tree-planting ceremony in the Áras garden, in front of the peace bell, which was placed there in 2008 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Belfast Agreement.
People and dogs are welcome to enjoy concessions, free games and other fun. Admission to the park and the event is free. Another event is being planned to benefit the park. Puppy Palooza starts is from noon to 8 pm on Saturday, June 4 at Poo's on small

The Joy Tree Michelia alba, the Joy Tree Normally I would not ...
Normally I would not single out a species for this blog, but there are some plants which captivate everyone who sees them. I have visited many public gardens and I could construct a short list of plants that have a huge "wow" factor to them. Some of these plants are temperate, such as Tuberous Begonias, Camellias, Peonies, Fuchsias and Meconias, but some are tropical. Unfortunately, not all really spectacular species can grow in South Florida for the long term. The name of the tree stems for its use in Joy perfume, one of the most expensive produced. Both the orange Champak and white Joy trees grow alike, although the orange form grows a bit faster than the white. Both trees enjoy a good sunny spot in the garden, with rich soil, ample water, regular fertilizing, iron supplements and plenty of mulch. The results are worth the effort ! The flowers produced are fragrant on a level most people don't know or have ever experienced. This is an excellent candidate for planting where the prevailing wind can go through the tree and waft the fragrance toward the house. The trees are often available at plant sales and shows, especially if you are lucky enough to be near a sale from the Miami-based Tropical Flowering Tree Society. On the southwest coast of the state, such trees are seen more and more often, a real boon, given the balmy and protective climate offered in Naples and the coastal areas. This is a tree that deserves more merit as an urban planting. In protected areas, it could serve an interesting purpose: fragrance in an urban landscape. As a collector's tree, it grows well and is well-behaved, not growing too fast or with brittle branches or messy seed pods. I hope you have the pleasure of experiencing one of these trees soon, for it will change your mind about what people plant in their own gardens.
